You have done the homework and like the concepts of being more flexible, accessible, having greater capacity and all the other advantages the cloud has to offer. Now, you are ready and want to take part or all of your business-critical applications and systems and move them to the cloud, but there is one catch. You’ve heard that, in order to do so, you will have to dump all your Microsoft Exchange Server, SharePoint Server, and SQL Server application licensing and have everything relicensed. The prospect of having to lose the substantial investment you’ve just made into your current Microsoft application licensing and taking on the substantial expense of relicensing everything is a real roadblock, right? Well, I have good news for you! Microsoft has a nice little benefit tied to its Software Assurance (SA) program that will allow you to extend the value of your server application licenses by deploying them either on-premises or in the cloud. By leveraging the SA program, you can now take advantage of the lowest cost computing infrastructure for all of your changing business priorities.

With License Mobility through Software Assurance, for any eligible product, you may:

  • Move your licensed software from your servers to a third party’s shared servers;
  • Access your licensed software running on the third party’s shared servers under the appropriate access licenses*;
  • Run your software in virtual OSEs on the third party’s shared servers;
  • Manage your OSEs that you use on the third party’s shared servers; and
  • Manage your OSEs that you use on your servers using software that you run on the third party’s shared servers.

There are, of course, some restrictions as well as several important steps that need to be followed in order to leverage the License Mobility through SA benefits, and you can’t just move your SA-eligible licensing to any cloud you choose. The good news is Microsoft’s License Mobility program is generally available to its Volume Licensing customers, and, as an “Authorized Mobility Partner,” Trivalent can help you understand your current license positon as well as all the potential benefits and options available to you. To find out more about Software Assurance or how you can qualify for the License Mobility through SA benefits, please contact your account manager, send us an email, or call us at (616) 222-9200 (option 1, then 4).
